A rare find from the mid 19thc is this beautifully turned cherrywood cooking instrument, known as a Spurtle....it was used for stirring porridge, soups and broths...... the rod like shape meant that the porridge can be stirred without forming lumps or congealing, unlike a spoon which has a "dragging" effect during stirring, ....the low surface area also meant that the porridge had less chance of sticking.....it is in very good condition with an excellent colour and patina.
