A rare 16thc Siegburg funnel-necked drinking jug for wine. It has an ovoid and ribbed body shape, with thumbed base foot rim to form a frill decoration. The handle and relief medallions were applied separately when the jug was still at the "leather-hard" stage before firing. As decorated drinking jugs cost twice as much as plain ones, it is fair to assume these would have been bought by the well off of the day, such as Merchants and Artisans. Lower Rhineland. Germany. C1540-50.
