An unusual late 18thc / early 19thc brass rug prodder and hook...Proddy rugs are made, as the name implies, by prodding or poking strips of fabric through hessian or linen from the back side using a prodder..... Rag rugs made this way have many names, such as clippies, stobbies, clippers and peggies.....in Northumberland they are called proggy mats and were often made for more utilitarian use such as by the back door, their pile hiding dirt well.  The prodder has a gentleman with a beard decoration to the top of the prodder and the hook is part of a birds head and beak.....in excellent condition and very tactile.

English C1780-C1820.
