Code: MS 0012

Dimensions:

L: 6" (15.2 cm)Di: 2" (5.1 cm)

A fine example of an early 19thc "Gourd" powder flask (a gourd is a vegetable, not unlike the cucumber, but with a hard case) used by sportsmen in the 19thc for powder for their muzzle-loading guns, flasks such as these were safer for gunpowder as they were not prone to accidently exploding as the metal flasks could do by sparking if struck on another abrasive object.... this flask has a turned boxwood cap and pourer with incised line decoration of ebony....in perfect condition and with an excellent colour.

English. C1840-60.      Provenance of the Brian Hawtin collection.
