Here's a rare survival from the late 17thc / early 18thc....a brass salamander with a turned ash handle....salamanders were used by putting them into the fire to heat up and then they would be laid on top of the pies or biscuits to brown them....this one is also well worn, so also would have been used to peel off the pies or biscuits from the oven or fire....the copper rolled rivets joining the base to the iron handle, help us to age this piece as this was a method that was used in the 17thc on warming pans and other lidded implements....I particulary like the shaped ironwork at the base of the handle and the small early burn to the wooden handle....excellent quality and condition for a domestic item.
